TEPNG’s Obagi pipeline shutdown

Production of Total E&P Nigeria Limited’s (TEPNG) 12 in. Obagi-Rumuekpe pipeline has been suspended after a crude oil spill. Approximately 35 000 boe and 6 million m³/d (212 million ft³/d) of natural gas are produced in the Obragi field.

TEPNG comments

Charles Ogan, Deputy General Manager of TEPNG, stated: “During a crude oil expedition operation on 16 August 2015, an abnormal situation was observed as the oil expedited from Obagi was not received at Rumuekpe metering station. Expedition was immediately stopped and a helicopter over-flight was carried out, which revealed oil spill and fresh excavations on the pipeline right of way. The volume of oil spilled and area of impact have not been estimated in view of the highly volatile nature of the area and the security concerns.”

Alleged causes of the spill

TEPNG believes the oil spill was caused by an attack on the pipeline. If true, it will be the second attack on the pipeline within a matter of months; first beginning in May 2015. The area is still inaccessible to the company due to its high security volatility.
