Letter warns of more bombings on EnCana’s pipelines
Police are investigating a letter sent to the Dawson Creek Daily News on Wednesday 14 April threatening more attacks on northeastern British Columbia's natural gas facilities, belonging to EnCana Corp.
The letter warns that a "time out" in the attacks that began last year is over and that a "long and hot summer is coming,". It states: "this land belongs to us and our children not to you. You are the criminals not us…”, and threatens: “be prepared for action as we intend to fight back with a range you haven't seen before… get out of our home lands and stop poisoning us or face the consequences."
It is the fourth such threatening letter to be received by the newspaper. One of which police determined to be a hoax. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said police are investigating whether the letter is from the same person who sent previous notes. Whereas pervious letters had been handwritten, the latest has been typed.
There have been six unsolved pipeline bombings on EnCana's operations around Tomslake, near Dawson Creek, since October 2008. The attacks have caused property damage, but no injuries.
Prior to the first bombing, an anonymous letter was sent to to the Dawson Creek Daily News and to Encana, calling the company "terrorists" and warning that they would continue bombing until EnCana pulled out of the area. The writer claims the company’s operations threaten the health of local residents.
Police say they believe the attacks are the work of a local resident or group residents with a grudge against EnCana. They have also said they believe some residents of the area are withholding information about the case.
