John Fletcher, Standards Compliance Manager at Elcometer, was presented with the Lifetime Excellence and Achievement Award from ASTM in recognition of his services to the D01 Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications committee, following his last committee meeting in Colorado in June.
A member of ASTM International since 2007, John was made Chairman for the DOI Committee in 2010, serving three consecutive two-year terms, after which, he became Vice Chairman. He went on to be nominated as a Director on the ASTM International Board for a three year term, finishing in December 2019. Throughout his time at ASTM, John has also been Chairman of D01 Sub-committee D01.23: Physical Properties of Applied Paint Films for 10 years and a member of Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings.
“I am honoured to receive this award from the D01 committee. I have really enjoyed my work with ASTM and shall miss my regular meetings with D01 members, many of whom I would call my friends. I joined ASTM after a lengthy period of preparing ballot responses for Elcometer’s founder Ian Sellars so I was well steeped in the ASTM methodology before I started attending committee meetings. I never expected to be asked to first Chair Sub-committee D01.23 and then be nominated for the role Chair of D01 itself, which in turn provided me the opportunity to be nominated to serve as a Director on the ASTM International Board.
The ASTM standards process values every member’s, contribution - ASTM is a standard development organisation that has true consensus at its heart. I aim to continue to contribute electronically from my home when I am retired but I would like to take this opportunity to thank my employer, Elcometer Limited, and the team at Elcometer Inc. and Elcometer Limited for their considerable support for my work with ASTM. I would also like to thank my fellow D01 members for their help and guidance to me as a D01 Committee Officer and to the staff of ASTM, who will continue to facilitate the more or less continuous main and sub-committee standards work.
In 1982, John began working at Elcometer, an inspection equipment manufacturer for the coatings, concrete and metal detection industries. Responsible for Elcometer’s compliance with ISO 9001, Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001, Environmental Management Systems, John travelled to the USA twice a year, to represent Elcometer at ASTM meetings. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) as well as a former President and Trustee. As a Chartered Scientist, through ICorr, he is also a member of both SSPC and NACE.
