Nace pipeline integrity seminar focuses on PHMSA’s new 80% Rule
Nace International, The Corrosion Society, will hold its annual Pipeline Integrity Seminar (PIMS) beginning 25th January 2010, in Houston TX, USA, where the focus will be how pipeline owners and operators can take advantage of the new 80% Rule.
Following the issuance of a new rule from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA, part of the US Department of Transport), which allows pipeline operators the option of increasing their maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) to 80% if they meet certain standards, the annual Nace pipeline integrity meeting will focus on how best to make use of this new ruling.
To qualify for the 80% Rule, operators must meet specified design, construction, inspection, operational and maintenance standards. The implementation of the rule reflects the significant improvements made in pipeline integrity in recent years; in order to operate safely, manufacturing processes and metals must meet high standards. Likewise, coating and inspection methods must ensure the pipeline is protected from corrosion and from pipeline failure.
Qualifying pipelines will benefit from increased capacity and efficiency, without diminishing safety.
The Nace seminar in January will provide the education and training necessary to help pipeline owners and operators meet the requirements of the new rule.
