Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, has joined LSBUD, the UK’s leading online safe digging resource, to better protect its 80 000 miles of pipelines and those performing digging work near them.
The organisation transports gas to 11 million homes and businesses across the West Midlands, North West England, East Midlands, South Yorkshire, East of England and North London.
Historically, gas asset related enquiries for Cadent have been processed through the Electricity and Gas Location Enquiry System (EAGLES). Now Cadent is sharing all of its asset information on LSBUD’s central platform.
Richard Broome, MD at LSBUD, comments: “We’re thrilled to have Cadent on board. As we all know, the health and safety implications that come with striking a gas pipeline are incredibly serious, so through providing people with the location of all its underground pipes, Cadent has taken the right step to protect its infrastructure while enabling those working nearby to do so safely.
“This will also have a direct impact on Cadent from a customer service point of view. Its customer experience will be improved with fewer outages due to a reduction in third party damage, which means an improved reputation and fewer complaints. It really is a win/win situation.
“Cadent joining the LSBUD system is yet more proof that the gas networks in the UK understand the benefits of sharing their asset information with each other and those doing the digging. To date, we have more than 80 percent of the UK’s gas networks registered on our portal. This is something we are actively looking to grow, but also something we are very proud about.”
Steve Fraser, CEO at Cadent, comments: "Particularly during the challenges that we have all faced over the last 18 months, it is critical that we can ensure our customers and contractors are able to access our records remotely with an immediate response. This enables them to work safely and also protects our assets.
These customers are diverse and wide ranging across a wide section of industry from infrastructure building to domestic works. Through the use of the LSBUD system we look forward to helping them work safely during the continual increase in works across our operational area over the coming years."

Construction begins on Greensand’s carbon dioxide transit terminal at Port Esbjerg
When the tanks are full, the liquefied carbon dioxide will be loaded onto a dedicated carrier from Royal Wagenborg and shipped to the INEOS Nini platform in the Danish North Sea. From there, it will be safely injected via pipeline into subsurface reservoirs approximately 1800 m beneath the seabed for permanent storage.
