Pemex to stop moving gas via pipeline to curb theft

World Pipelines,

Pemex, Mexico’s state-owned oil company, has announced that it will no longer use pipelines to ship finished, usable gas or diesel amid a wave of fuel theft.

The company believes that more than a billion dollars’ worth of fuel was lost to thieves who drilled thousands of illegal taps into pipelines. Last year, Pemex discovered more than 2600 illegal taps along its network of ducts.

Pemex says it will use its pipelines across Mexico only for unfinished fuel. The final refinement stage will be performed at distribution terminals and tank farms, before the fuels are distributed to gas stations and industrial facilities. The change will implemented nationwide in the next few months.
