World Pipelines,
In a new report released by API and the Association of Oil Pipe Lines, pipelines have been deemed a highly safe and efficient means of transporting energy across the US. Pipeline accidents have been reduced by 62% from 2001 - 2012 due to continual efforts to improve the safety of the crude and petroleum pipelines network in the country.
Peter Lidiak, API Pipeline Director, said, “Statistically, pipelines have an almost 100% safety record and reaching a perfect record of safety is our industry’s goal. Key to that effort is to prevent accidents by improving inspection technology and management practices and oversight. In that regard, the industry has implemented best practices that have lowered corrosion-caused spills by almost 80% since 2012.”
Pipelines vital to US infrastructure
According to the Annual Liquid Pipeline Safety Performance Report & Strategic Plan, more than 14 billion bbls of crude oil and petroleum products were transported by around 186 000 miles of liquids pipelines in 2012. During the year, the industry examined more than 35 000 miles of pipeline using smart-pig technology and invested approximately US$ 1.6 billion in infrastructure safety.
“Pipelines are a vital part of this nation’s infrastructure and will be critical to creating jobs, growing our nation’s economy and securing our bright energy future,” Lidiak continued.
