The Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has applauded the decision to continue with the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project. The ambitious pipeline project will link Iran’s gas fields to energy-starved Pakistan (transporting approximately 2.15 million m3/d of gas) and is set to be beneficial to both countries’ economies.

Malik Tahir Javaid, Chairman of the PIAF, said in a statement that the meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani would help to resolve matters that were hindering the project.

Javaid commented that it was a long-standing demand of the business community that the national interests should be given preference as far as the gas pipeline project was concerned. The pipeline is anticipated to boost to economic activities and the manufacturing sector, enhance the bilateral trade between the two countries and bring the business communities closer together, as well as help to mitigate Pakistan’s energy crisis. Javaid further noted the efforts of the government in helping to ensure provision of electricity in the form of solar and coal fired power projects throughout the energy crisis.
