Dr. Joseph DeCarolis joins EIA as new Administrator

Dr. Joseph DeCarolis entered service yesterday as the 10th Administrator of the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
DeCarolis will be responsible for directing the US government’s primary energy statistical and analytical agency.
“I'm delighted to have Joe on board as EIA Administrator. At a time of immense change and opportunity in our energy sector, the American people need timely, relevant, and accurate information about US energy more than ever,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
“I am committed to maintaining EIA’s high standards for unbiased analysis, expanding our modelling capabilities, and making our models and data more transparent and accessible,” DeCarolis said. “As a decades-long consumer of EIA data, I believe the value of our agency’s mission is difficult to overstate.”
“I am grateful to President Biden and Secretary Granholm for trusting me to lead this amazing team,” DeCarolis said. DeCarolis is an expert in energy systems engineering. His research interests include energy modelling, computing, life cycle assessment, efficient building design, and open data initiatives.
DeCarolis worked as an environmental scientist in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development, focusing on the air pollution impacts of future energy system development. He also served as a professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University (NC State).
His distinguished honours and awards include the NC State Outstanding Teaching Award, NC State Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Achievement Award, the American Society for Engineering Education Outstanding New Teacher Award (Southeastern Section), and the National Science Foundation Career Award. He was also named a University Faculty Scholar at NC State.
