According to local reports, Bulgarian representatives will visit Turkey to discuss plans for the construction of a natural gas pipeline between the two countries, which would broaden Bulgaria’s natural gas resources. The planned pipeline will be approximately 114 km in length and is due for completion in two years.

Around 25% of Europe’s gas is supplied from Russia and many European countries rely entirely on its imports. Bulgaria currently receives around 90% of its natural gas from Russia and officials are concerned that the recent conflict in Ukraine may interrupt supplies.

During an announcement in Ankara, Turkey, Bulgarian authorities told local press that a team of experts, alongside representatives of the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy and Energy, are set to negotiate a gas pipeline connection between the two countries. Bulgarian officials are fully supportive of the project and have urged for swift planning and construction of the proposed pipeline.

In February 2014, Dragomir Stoynev, the Bulgarian Minister of Economy and Energy, and Taner Yildiz, the Turkish Minister of Energy, announced that the pipeline would play significant role in the diversification of gas supplies.
