Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has joined the board of Energy Transfer Partners, based in Dallas.
Energy Transfer Partners said in a statement Sunday that it is honoured to have Perry join its board of directors. He fills a vacancy caused by the recent death of Paul Glaske, the company's longest-sitting board member. "We know that Governor Perry's vision and experience will be a valuable addition to our board, which our executive management team looks to for strategic guidance," the company said.
Robert Haus, an Iowa spokesman for Perry, said Sunday that after serving as Texas' governor for the past 14 years, Perry will be using his executive, managerial and leadership experience in the private sector. Haus said Perry will not be publicly promoting the much-debated Bakken pipeline project.
"Gov. Perry has long held the position that America's energy should be developed for our national and economic security. Gov. Perry has also said American energy will come from a number of different sources, from traditional to renewables," Haus said.
The company is seeking to build the Bakken oil pipeline from North Dakota to Illinois, via South Dakota and Iowa. Some 20 Iowa groups, including the Sierra Club, oppose the plan.
