Indian PM inaugurates Dabhol-Bangalore pipeline
At the 8th Asia Gas Partnership Summit in New Delhi last week, organised jointly by Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the US$ 722 million gas pipeline that connects Dabhol in Maharashtra to Bangalore in Karnataka.
Dabhol-Bangalore pipeline
The 1000 km gas pipeline passes through Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Bellary, Devanagere, Chitradurga, tumkur, Ramanagaram, Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban districts. The project was developed by Gail and took 19 month to complete. The pipeline has a design capacity of 16 million m3/day of natural gas, which can be used to produce 3000 MW of energy.
According to a statement released by India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the pipeline traverses through 18 national highways, 20 railway crossings, 83 cased crossings and 11 major river crossings.
Change in the Indian energy sector
India's Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Doctor M. Veerappa Moily, said emerging markets in Asia were witnessing double digit growth of natural gas usage. According to Moily, the Government plans to double India's current pipeline length of over 15 000 km to 30 000 km by 2030, and to make the country energy independent by that time.
Over the years, natural gas has become increasingly important as a source of energy in the country, with the rate of growth in natural gas consumption being the highest among all commercial energy sources," Singh said at the Summit.
In a statement published by Gail, Singh said India needs to increase its energy supply by "three to four times within the next two decades." "To bridge this gas between supply and demand, we are encouraging domestic and global companies to explore our onshore and offshore regions," he added.
