The MENA region, along with countries like Mauritania, Namibia, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Canada, is expected to emerge as major hydrogen suppliers. At the same time, the European Union aims to replace traditional fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen and has set ambitious targets for domestic production and imports by 2030.

To meet rising demand, significant investments in hydrogen infrastructure are estimated, especially in EU-internal pipelines and storage facilities.

Various carriers for hydrogen transport, including pipelines and ammonia, are being considered. Repurposing existing gas pipelines is a vital strategy for developing the hydrogen market, although logistical challenges remain.

Overall, the projected growth in global hydrogen demand indicates a transformative shift in the energy landscape and geopolitical dynamics by 2030 and beyond.

In their joint whitepaper Bulk Transport Options for Green Molecules, ILF Consulting Engineers’ Management Consulting Team, along with Dii Desert Energy, had a look at the comparison for levelised cost of hydrogen transportation for different existing and planned pipelines. Furthermore, they compared these values with levelised transportation cost for an electrical subsea cable and an ammonia shipping route.

While the vision of a climate-neutral European continent is clear, the identification of specific pathways remains complex, and coordination challenges within the supply chain and the absence of harmonised EU-level regulations pose obstacles. The team initiated expert interviews with key players in the green molecules value chain and stakeholders throughout production, transportation, and offtake.

Bulk Transport Options for Green Molecules takes a look at global Hydrogen trade, cross continent pipelines, economics, and offers selected interviews.
