The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has established a steering committee to facilitate the construction of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline. The 740 km pipeline is set to help guarantee the long-term energy security of Nigeria and forms part of the government’s plan to increase power generation from 4000 MW to 40 000 MW.

A statement issued in Abuja by Ohi Alegbe, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Department, NNPC, stated that the pipeline project steering committee was established with the aim of ensuring efficient and accelerated actualisation of the task in line with President Goodluck Jonathan's gas revolution agenda. Furthermore, Group Managing Director Joseph Dawha noted in the statement that while progress was being made in the execution of the OB3 and Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) projects, realisation of the AKK project had been very slow.

"In order to strengthen this critical government national priority project and have it refocused for accelerated implementation, there is the compelling need for the establishment of a dedicated AKK project steering team with clear governance structure," Dawha commented.

According to reports, the steering committee will be responsible for providing general guidance and direction, granting approval for business models, equity participation, budgets, endorsing strategic investors and corresponding with the government. The committee will be chaired by Dawha and will include Group Executive Directors of Gas and Power, Exploration and Production well, as Commercial and Investment, from NNPC.
