SwRI director receives 2016 Industrial Gas Turbine Award

Dr. Klaus Brun, a Program Director in the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Mechanical Engineering Division, will receive the 2016 Industrial Gas Turbine Award given by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Gas Turbine Institute (ASME-IGTI).
The award “recognises sustained personal creative scientific or technological contributions unique to electric power or mechanical drive industrial gas turbine technology.” Brun will receive the award at the 2016 Turbo Expo, to be held 13 - 17 June in Seoul, South Korea.
“This industry recognition is a tribute to Klaus’ leadership, initiative, technical expertise, and broad contributions to the technical community,” said Danny Deffenbaugh, Vice President of SwRI’s Mechanical Engineering Division.
A recognised expert in turbomachinery, Brun is experienced in performance prediction, off-design function, testing, degradation, uncertainty diagnostics, and root-cause failure analysis of gas turbines, reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors, steam turbines and pumps.
A Fellow of ASME, Brun is chair of the sCO2 Power Cycles Symposium and the ASME sCO2 Power Cycles Committee, and serves on the ASME-IGTI Oil and Gas Applications Committee, ASME Codes and Standards Committee, Asia Turbomachinery Symposium Advisory Committee, Fan Conference Advisory Committee, and Latin American Turbomachinery Conference Advisory Committee. He also is a member of Sigma Xi and the American Petroleum Institute (API) and is on the API 616, 617 and 692 Task Forces.
His awards include a 2007 R&D 100 Award and seven ASME-IGTI Oil and Gas Application Committee Best Paper awards since 1998.
He holds six US patents related to turbomachinery and is the author of nearly 200 publications. He holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Florida-Gainesville, and a master’s degree and doctorate in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia.
