Northern Endurance Partnership celebrates twin milestones for carbon storage and environmental stewardship

One of the world’s largest pipelay vessels, Saipem’s Castorone, has arrived in the Southern North Sea, marking the opening of an exciting chapter for the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), bringing one of the UK’s first carbon capture and storage networks closer to reality.

NEP is developing the transportation and storage infrastructure at the heart of the East Coast Cluster, creating the pathway for captured CO2 emissions from industry to be safely transported and permanently stored beneath the North Sea.

Stretching an impressive 325 m in length, Castorone is one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced pipelay vessels. Operated by Saipem for the offshore installation campaign, Castorone’s arrival marks the start of the major offshore pipe installation campaign, which will lay a 136 km pipeline that will connect industry on Teesside with NEP's Endurance storage site, one of the UK's most important carbon storage assets. Once complete, the pipeline will safely transport and permanently store millions of tonnes of captured CO2 deep beneath the seabed.

Sustainability is built into every stage of the project. During the offshore campaign, Castorone will be powered by almost 3000 t of marine biofuel, equivalent to the weight of around 240 double decker buses. The use of lower-carbon fuel celebrates a sustainability milestone and supports NEP's Sustainability Charter. This demonstrates how major infrastructure projects can be delivered more responsibly. As Castorone starts the offshore installation campaign, building the infrastructure needed to safely transport and store captured CO2 beneath the North Sea, the use of marine biofuel will help reduce emissions associated with construction activities, supporting NEP's ambition to minimise environmental impact while helping to deliver the UK's net zero future.

While Castorone gets to work, underwater technology specialist Sonardyne will also deploy their environmental monitoring landers at key seabed locations in the project area. These intelligent, autonomous devices will continuously monitor the surrounding marine environment, from currents to small changes in water chemistry, providing valuable data to help verify safe CO2 storage at the site for years to come. The deployment of the Landers reinforces NEP's commitment to protecting the marine environment while delivering critical net zero infrastructure. By providing continuous monitoring before, then throughout injection and future operations, the technology will help build confidence in carbon storage, support environmental protection and demonstrate how CCS projects can be delivered responsibly while protecting marine ecosystems.

For the East Coast Cluster and communities of Teesside and the Humber, this milestone is another important step towards building a new low-carbon industry that helps to reenergise the region, protect existing jobs, create new opportunities and attract investment locally.
