According to reports, Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has expressed an interest in partnering with GAIL India Ltd on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India natural gas pipeline project. The four countries have nominated a company for each section of the project, with GAIL acting as the Indian representative.

Officials stated that IOC is keen to be equal partners with GAIL in the US$ 9 billion pipeline project with equal rights to sell gas imported from the pipeline. IOC representatives noted that the company wants to market half of the gas India will import through the pipeline during a recent presentation to Oil Secretary Saurabh Chandra.

The 1680 km pipeline, which will transport natural gas from the Caspian Sea, off the coast of Turkmenistan, through Afghanistan into Pakistan and further to India, is likely to be completed by 2017 – 2018. The pipeline will have a designed capacity to carry 90 million m3/d of gas for a 30-year period. 38 million m3/d would be supplied to India and Pakistan, and Afghanistan would receive the remaining 14 million m3/d.
